Impact of AdBlue (SCR) and NOx Sensor Failures on Heavy-Duty Vehicle Performance | Klötze Technic
In Euro 5 and Euro 6 heavy commercial vehicles (trucks, tractors, buses), AdBlue (SCR) emission system errors and NOx sensor faults are among the most frequent issues encountered by fleet managers and mechanics. These technical issues, highly searched on search engines, can lead to severe engine torque reductions and costly component replacements if not addressed in time.
The NOx (Nitrogen Oxide) sensor measures harmful gas levels in the exhaust stream and sends real-time data to the Engine Control Unit (ECU). When the sensor fails or loses calibration, 3 main symptoms occur:
AdBlue consists of 32.5% urea and 67.5% deionized water. When water evaporates, urea crystallizes into hard white deposits inside the SCR injector, dosing unit, and exhaust piping walls.
To ensure proper SCR operation, the dosing pump pressure (typically 4.5 to 9 bar) and injector spray pattern must be calibrated periodically. An incorrect spray angle prevents uniform mixing with exhaust gases and causes crystal blockages in the exhaust pipe.
The SCR system operates under micron-level tolerances. A clogged or sub-standard AdBlue filter inside the dosing module forces the pump motor to overheat and burn out.
| Commercial Vehicle Component | OEM / High-Quality Part (Klötze Technic) | Low-Quality Aftermarket Part |
|---|---|---|
| AdBlue Filter | Filters down to 3 microns, trapping urea crystals and protecting the pump. | Defective pore structure; lets contaminants pass or clogs injectors. |
| NOx Sensor Probe | Resistant to extreme exhaust heat and offers stable, precise measurements. | Loses calibration rapidly, frequently triggering Limp Mode. |
| Hoses & Connectors | Made from specialized polymers resistant to AdBlue's corrosive nature. | Reacts with fluid, degrading internally and clogging the lines. |
