Top 3 Most Common Pneumatic Valve Failures in Scania, Volvo, and MAN Trucks

Heavy-duty industry giants Scania, Volvo, and MAN rely on complex pneumatic systems to ensure driving safety and comfort. However, the pneumatic valves—the "directing brains" of these systems—can eventually give up due to harsh working conditions, dirty air, and extreme heat.

A valve failure doesn't just mean an air leak; it can result in the vehicle breaking down, brakes locking, or the suspension collapsing. Here are the top 3 pneumatic valve failures we encounter most frequently in European trucks and their solutions:

1. 4-Way Protection Valve Failures The 4-way valve safely distributes the air from the compressor to the vehicle's various brake and auxiliary circuits. If a leak occurs in one circuit, it prevents the air from draining from the other circuits.

  • Common Symptoms: The vehicle won't release the parking brake, a specific circuit's air tank won't fill, or a red air pressure warning appears on the dashboard.

  • Main Cause of Failure: Typically caused by oil carbonization (soot) from the compressor or moisture escaping the air dryer freezing in winter, tearing the diaphragms or jamming the spring mechanisms inside the valve.

  • Solution: Can be repaired with a repair kit, but if there is wear on the housing, replacing the entire valve with a reliable part that meets OEM standards is the most definitive solution.

2. Air Dryer Unloader Valve Sticking When the system reaches the desired pressure (usually 10-12 bar), the unloader valve opens, venting the excess air produced by the compressor into the atmosphere with a "hiss" and allowing the compressor to rest.

  • Common Symptoms: The unloader valve never closes and constantly leaks air. The compressor fails to fill the tank or has to work continuously without resting.

  • Main Cause of Failure: A small carbon particle, burr, or dried oil residue settling on the unloader valve's seat prevents it from closing completely. Also, O-rings under the valve hardening from heat lead to leaks.

  • Solution: The air dryer housing must be cleaned, and the unloader valve must be replaced. To prevent this failure, using high-quality Klötze Technic approved moisture and oil separator filters is a must.

3. ECAS (Electronically Controlled Air Suspension) Valve Block Leaks The ECAS valve blocks, used especially in new generation Volvo FH, Scania R/S series, and MAN TGX vehicles for comfort and loading ease, are sensitive components. They manage the air going to the air bellows via electronic signals.

  • Common Symptoms: The vehicle sags to one side or completely drops when parked. The chassis raises very slowly during loading or cannot stay at the desired level.

  • Main Cause of Failure: Excessive moisture entering the system damages the solenoids inside the valve block or dirt clogs the narrow air channels.

  • Solution: ECAS valve blocks are highly sensitive. The faulty coil should be identified; if there is an internal housing leak, the entire block must be replaced. Leaks at the fittings where the installation pipes enter the valve must also be checked.

Expert Advice: Pneumatic system failures trigger one another. If your compressor is pumping oil, changing your valves is only a temporary fix. Always focus on the root cause (usually the compressor or air dryer) during system overhauls, and choose Klötze Technic quality truck spare parts for long-lasting use.
